How to choose the right tires for your car?

There is a wide range of tires to choose from, and prices for tires of the same size can differ several times over. The most expensive tire is not always the best choice for every driver, and the cheapest one is not necessarily a bad one. The right choice depends on your car, your driving habits, the conditions you drive in and your budget.

At FS.ee you will find summer tires, winter tires – studded tires and studless winter tires – and all-season tires across a range of price classes.

To find the right tires, use the FS.ee tire search by your car’s registration number or by tire size.

Different tire sizes on the front and rear?

Our smart tire search finds matching front and rear tires and automatically puts together a staggered tire set. You don’t need to search for front and rear axle tires separately.

What to consider when choosing tires?

The first thing to check is the tire size, load index and speed rating specified for your car. When you search by registration number, FS.ee finds the right tire sizes for your vehicle automatically. If you already know the size you need, you can search for tires directly by width, profile and rim diameter.

When choosing a tire, it is also worth considering where and how the car is driven. A small car driven calmly around town, a family car that covers a lot of highway miles and a powerful or heavy car do not have the same needs.

The EU tire label also helps when comparing tires, showing the tire’s wet grip, rolling resistance and external rolling noise ratings. Winter tire labels may also carry snow and ice grip markings. The label gives useful information about a tire’s properties, but it doesn’t show everything – for example, how the tire behaves in different winter conditions, its handling or how quickly it wears.

Summer, winter or all-season tires?

Summer tires are designed for use in warmer conditions, and their rubber compound and tread pattern are made to perform primarily on dry and wet roads at summer temperatures.

For an Estonian winter, you need to choose suitable winter tires. The biggest advantage of studded tires is grip on icy roads. When it comes to studless winter tires, in Estonian conditions you should favor tires designed for Nordic winters, whose softer rubber compound and tread pattern are made to perform at low temperatures and on snow and ice.

All-season tires are a separate tire type that can be a sensible choice mainly for drivers who spend the winter driving mostly in Central and Southern Europe, or who use their car little in Estonia and can avoid driving in tougher winter conditions.

Is a more expensive tire always better?

Not necessarily.

The strengths of premium tires can include better handling, better wet grip, lower rolling resistance, lower noise levels or more consistent performance across different conditions. But not every driver needs the highest possible performance from a tire.

At the same time, a lower price doesn’t automatically mean a bad tire. What matters is knowing what you get for your money and the conditions you’ll be using the tire in.

That’s why, for most common tire sizes, we also highlight FS Recommends picks in different price classes. We choose these ourselves, based on our experience, the tire’s properties, its price and the offers currently available on the market.

Ordering and fitting tires

You can order tires from FS.ee anywhere in Estonia. Have your tires delivered to an address of your choice, or order them with fitting at the FS Teenused workshop in Tallinn or at one of our partner service centers elsewhere in Estonia.
